The last two seasons have been seasons to forget if you are a Detroit Pistons fan. 57 wins and two invitations to the NBA draft lottery are not what Pistons fans area accustomed to. Hopefully with the change in ownership ( Davidson's to Tom Gores ), Detroit fans can get excited again about going down to Auburn Hills to watch a good basketball team. The Pistons own the number 8 & 33 picks in the 2011 NBA Draft. While this isn't the most talented draft in recent years, the Pistons hope to get a talented player to add to its current core of talented young players in Greg Monroe, Austin Daye, Jonas Jerebko and Rodney Stuckey. Along with getting a couple new players, Detroit will also have a new Head Coach. Below are 4 things to look for this summer.
1. New Head Coach - Look for Mike Woodsen, Bill Laimbeer, Lawrence Frank and Kelvin Sampson to be considered. Whoever ends up with the job must get the Pistons back to playing every night. Defense wins championships and that has been non-existent the past two seasons. They also need someone who the players respect....My Prediction - Mike Woodsen - Former Atlanta Hawks Head Coach
2. Draft - The Pistons need to get big up front, but they also are in need of a Point Guard. Is Rodney Stuckey or Will Bynum the answer at the point ? The Pistons could use the number 8 pick on a big man like Enes Kanter or Tristen Thompson. Or they could get the best athlete available and grab Kawhi Leonard or Bismack Byombo. With the # 33 pick the Pistons could grab guard Nolan Smith from Duke or back to the basket big man Keith Benson from Oakland University.
3. Roster Shake-up - Look for a drastic change in the roster this summer. Expect Jonas Jerebko, Greg Monroe, Austin Daye, Rodney Stuckey, Ben Gorden, Will Bynum and Charlie Villanueva to return for the Pistons. Veteren Post player Chris Wilcox finished strong and may return. Expect Tayshaun Prince to be traded via sign and trade. Joe Dumars will do everything in his power to trade Richard Hamilton for an expiring contract. Ben Wallace has one year left on his contract, but is leaning towards retirement. The Pistons need to add a a physical, effective presence in the front court and a pure point guard. The best way to accomplish that may be through free agency or trades.
4. NBA Lock-out looming - It looks like the NBA will follow suit with the NFL. A new CBA ( Collective Bargaining Agreement ) has to be agreed upon before the July 1 deadline. Expect a lock-out, but not for long. David Stern knows the NBA needs a shot in the arm and a lock-out is a not appealing to fans. Look for the players and owners to resolve this before training camp in September.
